Comics in The College News
The College News has run queer feminist comics alongside their regular articles since its rebirth in 1978. The most well-known three were Alison Bechdel’s nationally-syndicated cartoon "Dykes to Watch Out For," Mawrtyr Emily Cotlier’s "Suffragette City," and Mawrtyr R. Soltis’s recurring, unnamed illustrations.
The College News was the first college newspaper to run Alison Bechdel's comic "Dykes to Watch Out For." It ran in the paper from the mid-1980s until 2008. Alison Bechdel was the 2012-2013 Emily Balch Seminar Speaker.
Created, written, and drawn by Mawrtyr Emily Cotlier '93, "Suffragette City" documented everyday life at Bryn Mawr. The comic often featured LGBT characters casually discussing everything from classes to Bryn Mawr's recursive dating pool. "Suffragette City" was published regularly in the College News, and was compiled by Cotlier into a single volume in her senior year.
R. Soltis's comics discussed life as a butch lesbian, archery, and queering academics. They ran from 1995 until 1998.
