LET ME GET THERE

Photo collections

The carousel below contains a selection of over 100 photos of immigrants, migrants and sojourners, circa 1914–1925; five come from actual passports or consular documents and the rest are from U.S. passport applications. This selection highlights the breadth, diversity, and arresting beauty of photo portraits from the age of mass migration. These aren't "immigrant types" but rather individuals with a tangible identity and a story to tell.

The photographers are mostly anonymous and the places they were shot, unknown, but we can say something definitive about the subjects and that fundamentally changes the way we look into them rather than at them.

My plan is to integrate many or all of the photo collections already assembled into this scalar website.

For now, you can view the full collection in media-only format on Flickr.
