MIR
The MIR was a political action movement started in Chile amidst extreme turmoil and political tension in 1964. Originally, it encompassed various political agendas, including anarchism, socialism, and other political thinkings. Over time however, it developed into a solely Marxist-Lenininst political organization.
The MIR was led for many years by Miguel Enriquez until his assassination in 1974. Although they participated in armed conflict throughout their long history, the organization was strongly opposed to terrorist actions. Unfortunately, their enemies were not, and the leaders faced systematic extermination at the hand of the government and it’s military leaders for many many years.
The MIR was unable to mount a successful opposition against Pinochet after his coup in 1973, and while most of their leadership was murdered at the hands of government agents, the group continued on and even released a manifesto lawsuit pointing out the various government atrocities committed against it’s members and others. Today the MIR is an active political party in Chile with a far-left ideology.
