Introduction
It is not uncommon for institutions of any sort to change their image as time passes. The question that arises however is what informs this change in architectural style and what the new style conveys about the institution. The National Research Council of Canada came to being in the early 20th century. This institution conducted research in an era of fast changing technologies and improved living conditions. The shift in the Council’s research facilities’ architectural style offers a parallel to the changing research and science frontier of the time. The NRC Montreal Road Campus and its Streamline Moderne buildings will allow the unpacking of the changing aesthetic of research institutions and the streamlining of science.
