Economic Influences on Style

The economic hardships of the period that this campus was built are not unfamiliar to most. The construction of the campus began in 1938 following the economic depression of the 1930s. Very soon after ground was broken, the Second World War began, which no doubt meant many funds were allotted to the war effort. Therefore, the more restrained Streamline Moderne style of the campus is a stark contrast to the grandiose ‘Temple of Science’ at 100 Sussex.
