Changing Face of the Research Campus

An interesting stylistic shift in the style of the NRC labs can be compared to the changing stylistic shift of universities. These two kinds of campuses of knowledge follow a similar discourse. Even within Ottawa, we can see this change. The University of Ottawa has many of its older buildings in the classical style, as many older campuses also do. Around the mid-century, the brand new Carleton University campus in Ottawa was designed in a modern style. Keeping this shift in mind at the university campuses as well as the NRC labs, we can take away that new intellectual institutions like these saw it fit to represent themselves as modern, high-tech and at the cutting edge of research and science.
