Ball on Public Architecture

As a closing quote, Ball offers an interesting reflection on public buildings and their connotations:

‘‘The requirements fulfilled by public building design have varied greatly with government, place, and time. Styles and designs of public building have varied accordingly. But there are a few underlying fundamentals. Every public building offers up for view its own unique resolution of some of these: whether its design ought to mould fashion, or follow it; whether it should stand proudly apart from its context, or sink discreetly into it; whether it can or should present a strong, even standardized, image readily identifiable as a branch of a particular of a particular authority, or follow surrounding tastes’’.[1]
