In 1940, the famed photographer Weegee captured scenes at Café Royal that captured the romance of the incredibly central café. It also captured a nostalgia - the subjects were cultural figures, sure, but by visiting the Lower East Side cafés they were participating in a moment of Jewish culture that had already in a sense passed.
