Adah Isaacs Menken

Adah Isaacs Menken (1835-1868) was an American actress and poet, internationally famous for her starring role in the equestrian melodrama Mazeppa, in which she was stripped on stage to a flesh-colored body stocking. Adah lead a glamorous and spectacular life as a celebrity, often blurring the line between performance and reality. Fervently Jewish in adulthood, Adah once said of her faith that

"Through that pure and simple religion I have found greatest comfort and blessing.”
