Jazz Capital of the World
New York City is commonly referred to as the jazz capital of the world. The city's skyscrapers have been the backdrop for many of the genre's defining moments and its nightclubs have incubated some of our nation's finest musicians. It is the place where every young player aspires to arrive and the city where every jazz legend spent part of their career.
But the story of jazz in New York is neither simple nor linear. As the demographics of New York's boroughs shifted and the art itself changed, jazz migrated from neighborhood to neighborhood, and borough to borough with no one place staying hip for more than a decade or two. New clubs sprang up in different parts of the city as young performers radically reinterpreted the genre. Today, New York is the global home of jazz as well as its laboratory.
Please explore our project further to learn the full story of jazz in the city that never sleeps.
