Process

The Scalar book Here, There and Everywhere was inspired by the Fillius Jazz Archive at Hamilton College. As a class, we decided to look at the jazz era, focusing on styles of jazz in various cities. After deciding that the city of Chicago was a crucial location for the evolution of jazz, our group broke up the research into several subtopics. These subtopics included Jazz in Chicago, a Brief History of Chicago, the History of Jazz, African Americans in Chicago, and South State Street. We each researched and wrote a piece on one of these topics, learned how to use Scalar, and created a preliminary Scalar book. In addition to writing articles, we included related images and citations, and finalized a thesis for our overall project. After receiving feedback on our project, we decided that it was necessary to include interviews from Hamilton College’s Fillius Jazz Archive. We chose interviews with musicians crucial to the development of jazz in Chicago. We then wrote a biography on each selected musician and included the interview segments most relevant to our topic. Additionally, we discovered the importance of race, both in terms of the jazz culture and in terms of race culture in Digital Humanities. We felt that it was necessary to explore these issues and therefore added to our existing section African Americans in Chicago, as well as created a new section titled Race in Digital Humanities. In the end, we reflected back on our project with sections such as how we developed our own project, what makes this a Digital Humanities project, and a potential rubric to grade the Digital Humanities project. Finally, we wrote peer reviews of our classmate’s Scalar books.
