History of Jazz Bibliography

Main article

Gioia, Ted. "A History of Jazz: The Prehistory of Jazz." The New York Times, 1997. https://www.nytimes.com/books/first/g/gioia-jazz.html

Overall this was by far the best source used. It really marked a progression from West African traditions up until the creation of jazz. The source also yielded useful quotes and examples of musicians instrumental in the progression to the jazz style.

Morgan, Thomas L. "Jazz, The First Thirty Years." Last modified March 9, 2015. http://jass.com/jazzo.html.

This was a background source I used initially to navigate the birth of jazz. The site also had useful archival photos of jazz promotions, highlighting the cultural importance of blues/jazz.
