Elson, Mary. "Chicago: A Portrait and Brief History." Social Policy 32, no. 3 (2002): 37-39.
These few pages about Chicago are a part of a larger volume titled Social Policy. This section contains a general history of Chicago with special regard to the Great Chicago Fire, industry such as railroads and meatpacking, and the historical demographics of the city. The story of the young African American man who swam up onto a bank in a white neighborhood and was stoned to death for it, sparking the largest race riot in Chicago’s history in 1919, is particularly interesting in this source.
