IRA Tactics, Techniques and Procedures

As said in the last question, the IRA is focused on sending direct, clear messages to anyone that opposes them and will attempt to crush any organization that stands in their way. They don’t go out of their way to look for targets that will cause high casualties, but they’ll always pick a target which is sure to deliver a message close to home, for example, setting a bomb off near a official government building or making an assassination attempt on someone that hinders the Irish Republican Army’s overall goals of an independent Ireland.

One of the IRA’s most common attacks is to set up a car bomb in a specific location, and depending on the situation, they would either allow it to go off, or call in an anonymous telephone warning for officials to diffuse the bomb. These bombs could range from tiny pipe bombs all the way up to large 500 pound car bombs.

Expect the location of said attack to be an area that could either hurt the IRA’s cause (such as an anti terror or weapons government agency) or somewhere that sends a clear message about their cause, such as attacking a British military target.
