Conclusion

By giving players the opportunity to physically customize their main character, to make them their own person, their own character, is narratively empowering, like creating a character to plug into a fantastic world you’ve read about or seen before.  Think of how many readers have conjured up their own witch or wizard who would walk the halls of Hogwarts with Harry Potter.  Character Creation gives us that opportunity in a game’s particular world, to inhabit it as a character of our creation and also play a pivotal, main character role.

Players can further customize their character by granting new abilities and talents, shaping their experience differently than the physical appearance of their character.  These levels of customization and personalization serve to immerse players in a new world with a character of their creation, physically and in terms of ability.  One way or another, players have the chance to make a character their own, in a great many way, in the beginning and throughout the gameplay experience.
