The Knife
In that moment, perhaps out of sympathy or pity, he lowers his gun. Never before had he hesitated to attack anything in the game. His mind was racing–was the game trying to trick him? Why would it? His anxiety made his heart race, he probably seemed as nervous as the child. The child was also confused. She kept her knife pointed in his direction, no intent on changing her mind. He then made a bold decision, fearful for the sake of both of their lives (though he knew that there were no consequences in the game) and took the knife from her. She jumped back, scrambling away from him. They exchanged their looks of their own unique disbelief and after a moment of confusion, she fled.
He looked at the knife, it was engraved with letters. Words. But that was the least concerning detail at the moment. He was playing an army simulator, why was the kid in a war-torn city? Why did he not kill her, he had no problem killing everything else that moved in the game. But before he gave any of it too much thought, the world slowly faded to darkness.
