While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

Smaug Awakes

Bilbo Baggins has been sent to the bottom of the mountain fortress by Thorin to find the Arkenstone. Bilbo accidentally wakes Smaug up and fails to hide even while wearing the ring due to Smaug's impressive sense of smell. Bilbo begins a dialogue in order to distract Smaug while he attempts to get the Arkenstone and Smaug says some things that force audiences to think of the characters of the movie outside of their heroic roles. Smaug repeatedly calls Bilbo a thief for trying to steal from him and so introduces the element of greed to the films heroes. Smaug also adds an element of selfishness to the dwarves by berating them for sending Bilbo down there to do their dirty work.
