The pun on the minimal pair in vowel “far/fer” is made possible through the presence of another French general mentioned in King Lear whose name is “Monsieur La Far” (4.3.9). Even if this paper does not question the spelling of Le Fer’s name, the almost homophonic association of “far” and “fer” is highly plausible.
