HAVC 135B : German Art 1905-1945

Leistung

Leistung can be translated as performance, work achieved, or productivity. The term is personalized, referring to a person’s individual achievement (as opposed to a word like Arbeit, which means “work.”)

In the Nazi context, the word work was functionally replaced by Leistung as a means of exaggerating its significance.

Definition adapted from Eric Michaud, The Cult of Art in Nazi Germany, 2004.
