Publication Dates

Although my project's focus ultimately shifted away from questions of chronology, given the lack of data for the period from 1765 to 1790, publications dates are preserved in my spreadsheet for the benefit of future research. In general, I simplified dates to a single year in the "date" column, to allow for the creation of graphs, bolded the date to indicate that a note exists, and explained the source of ambiguity in the "notes" column.

Some notes, therefore, on the treatment of questionable dates:
  • THE RECESS, OR, A TALE OF OTHER TIMES - listed in Tracy as 1783-85 because the first volume was published alone in 83, then reprinted when 2nd vol released in 85. Semi-arbitrarily reduced this complexity to a simple 1785 listing; since Tracy's survey officially begins in 1790, will likely be a lone early outlier regardless.
  • Decided to just adopt "circa" dates as exact dates for THE SPECTRE CHIEF (c.1800) and THE WOOD DAEMON (c.1807).
  • Adopted 1819 for MATHILDA, written then but not published until 1959.
