"Let it Go" Lyrics Accentuate Elsa's Character
Furthermore, focusing in on the glove, the lyrics of the song “Let It Go” reinforce the theme of restraint, nurturing the role of female’s gender stereotypes (Buck). The common thread of the film and lyric of the song “Let It Go,” to “conceal, don’t feel,” is an essential theme of the glove’s symbolic meaning and in exploring Elsa’s character (A. Lee). Thus, a literal translation of this phrase would imply that Elsa should not show too much emotion to trigger her powers, or use her powers in general. Her curse is dangerous and should be locked away forever. On the other hand, examining the lyric more closely, the function of the glove to “conceal” keeps her from more than just showing her powers, but hiding away her true self (A. Lee). Despite the glove being a means to protect Elsa from the strength of her powers, she instead sees them as a constraint of who she really is and aims for the freedom she deserves. Trapped in her own skin, or gloves in this case, Elsa views the gloves as holding back her powers, and this ultimately keeps her from feeling love. Although she is not physically imprisoned, Elsa feels trapped in the sense of always needing to be the perfect “good girl” – essentially behaving as a loyal Queen who follows all the rules. Constrained by society, the citizens of Arendelle and her own sister, Elsa can no longer “conceal” herself as soon as her powers are revealed (A. Lee). When this perception is destroyed, Elsa falls into the consistency of Disney’s classic damsel in distress, internally imprisoned by holding back her true identity.
