Getting to Know Samantha Tran

I am a third-year Psychology major, minoring in Asian American Studies student at the University of California, Los Angeles. At the moment, my focus is on learning more about myself and my culture. This has always been an ambiguous subject to me. Even though my parents are originally from Vietnam, they continue to stress the fact that we are Chinese. However, from my experience, our culture and lifestyle is very much a mix of both Vietnamese and Chinese influence. Born in the San Gabriel Valley, I was always surrounded by other Asian Americans, and my view of the world was limited. All I knew was that school was of utmost importance and all I had to worry about was making my parents happy. So I continued my education, as I was supposed to, and now I'm here at UCLA. Being in LA, my view of the world has broadened, and it was here that I truly embraced culture and diversity. Because LA is made up of so many different ethnicities I've found my passion in getting to know individuals' stories, and I believe that it has really taught me to be open-minded and to never "judge a book by it's cover."
