Kim Fahle Bio

I am a 1st year PhD student in the English program at ODU. In addition to being a graduate student, I am also the Coordinator of the Writing Center at Virginia Wesleyan College. Prior to this position, I taught courses in composition, developmental reading and writing, literature, and theatre at several schools in the Hampton Roads area. My scholarly interests as of now focus on the intersection of community engagement, composition pedagogy, and digital technology in both the writing classroom and in writing centers. Though one of my professed interests is digital technology, I often feel woefully ignorant about many of the available technologies. That's why I am taking ENGL665; I want to better understand available technologies and innovative ways to utilize them in the classroom. What better way to do that than to collaborate with a class of others exploring these technologies and being inspired by their creativity and their insights?

My biggest goal for the course is a simple one: play. I often shy away from doing things I don't know how to do or am not very good at. I want to dive right into these technologies and push myself beyond my comfort zone or I will never figure out the possibilities that these technologies hold. That's why I have chosen the particular image that accompanies this bio. Believe it or not, that is actually a picture of me skydiving. I included it to remind myself that I can take the leap into the unknown. My hope is that by taking this leap, I will walk out with a few activities and/ or assignments that will engage students in their writing in a meaningful way and give them the skills to compose in multiple environments.
