Wolfe Poem 1 Annotation 1

The repetition that Frost uses in these three lines allows the idea of the loss of civilization of this area to be reiterated and for it to sink in to the reader right off the bat that this country town once was much more grandiose. However, the reader might begin to question, if the house, farm, and town are no more what they once were, then what exactly could they be referred to at the moment that “Directive” was written?
