The reader turns into a collaborating author

As I argued in my introduction
page
, I believe that Hypertext and IF (Interactive Fiction) allow the
reader to become a co-author by becoming an active participant in the work and
making decisions that create a unique plot to each reader.

What makes a reader only a reader when
reading a book in print? What makes a reader a collaborating author in a
Digital, hypertext,
and IF
work?

When you read a book that has been published
and printed in paper there is a line that separates the author from the reader.
This imaginary line is said to be there because the reader has no way to ask
the author what things mean and why he made the decisions he made. Whatever the
context of the book says it means, there is no arguing with the author about
it. In a Digital work, like hypertext and IF the reader has the freedom to
choose what path he/she wants to take. The author created the paths for the
reader to interact with them and to be able to have a different experience each
time they dive into the work.
