Eastern Culture Nucleus: Chinese Rare Books in the USC Libraries

Timeline

Chinese rare books broadly refer to printed books and bound manuscripts produced before the establishment of the Republic of China in 1911. Titles dated from early times to the Qianlong 乾隆 reign (1736-1795) of the Qing 清 dynasty (1644-1911) are usually considered as fine editions 善本. The earliest Chinese rare book at USC dates to 1515,  which corresponds to the last years of Zhengde 正德 reign (1506-1521) of Ming 明 dynasty (1368-1644).
