Regurgitation of Appropriated Western Music from South Korea
Towards the end of Korean War, America swooped in to protect the anti-Communist side, securing
Democratic presence in the peninsula. This gave America a good reason to set up Army bases in South Korea, where, arguably, the culture of consumption reemerged. Because South Korea (2nd poorest country at the time) had nothing, they had to entertain the outsiders for the cash and goods. The mije (“American”), from chocolate and canned goods to the vinyl records of the West, were the entrancing "foods" to the post-war, hungry Koreans. So how has a nation that only strived to consume the Western appeals appropriate the music and become a global hub of its own popular music, with listenership reaching all corners of the world? This path will investigate the growth of post-war, Westernized music scene of the Korean youth on multiple levels of genres, scenes, and media.
