One of the most terrifying scenes in the novel The Road was, after settling down for the night in the woods, presumably safe from those who hunt on the road, enormous trees begin falling all around the man and boy in the impossible dark. Their attempt to find "a clear space in the darkness" is essentially useless, the man must try to protect the son when they are both absolutely helpless. It is a overwhelming and quick scene that stuck with me and inspired me to think about this video. The key time before nightfall for them is so interesting, often when they are laying out a tarp, the boy will ask the most revealing or existential questions, they will sleep and have tempting or terrifying dreams, they are slightly more free from the terrors of the road once temporarily settled down. I wanted to look at a few passages that featured these dreams and thoughts and when I did, I realized that the man was often wrong about them. They are not simply sirens, flaunting some lost thing. He dreams of an orchard and beautiful woods and peaches. Simple beautiful things like this are not completely lost to them as he thinks. They miraculously find an abandoned apple orchard themselves, the man gives the boy a Coke, an entire bunker full of canned fruits is discovered. I wanted to create a simple video highlighting these things. I did not want this to be an analysis so I stayed away from narrating, instead focusing on the images of visions and the beauty in their lost world.
