Joe Grigas
Joe Grigas was a Lithuanian minor league baseball player born in the heart of South Chicago. He grew up aspiring to play baseball, and he received his chance after his Uncle's connections got him scouted by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was drafted in the first round of the 1967 Amateur Draft by the only team that took a look at him, the Pirates. Joe played baseball professionally for 4 years.
None of you know his name. You may read this and by tomorrow not remember his name. But his journey through baseball is the road more traveled by professional players. Woah, woah. More traveled? Yes. The careers of professional baseball players are not always glorious. Not everybody makes it to the show.
The odds were seemingly stacked against him from the start. His story of how he got there, the struggles he encountered, his contributions back to the game, and his family heritage make him a baseball hero, though nobody knows his name.
