Wangjing: Korean Migration

Wangjing, located at the NE corner of the 4th Ring Road, on the way out to the airport is the "Korean" area of the city, due to its density of Korean businesses. In the mid-2000s 700,000 South Koreans were in China, but this number has gone down in recent years. In Wangjing you can find various Korean food, bathhouses, churches, shops, and Korean International schools.

Wangjing is not just home to South Koreans, but North Koreans as well (see the page below).

For various reasons this was an area that I spent lots of time in, interacting with both populations. Perhaps it was something about being with fellow migrants, fellow outsiders, to the city, which was sometimes comforting.

I always say that between my interactions with Koreans in Wangjing and my Korean students at Tsinghua, I learned as much about Korea while in China as I did anything else. This is something that is possible only in a global city, with so many diverse circumstances of migration.
