Methodology

Data Collection

A
spreadsheet was created to add the data that I extracted manually from the British Academy website.

I started by looking at the lists of abstracts of the projects that were awarded a Postdoctoral Fellowship between 2008 and 2012.

The data was obtained from the following British Academy web site pages:

Year of award:

I focused on the most recent five years hoping to offer more useful information to those currently considering one of these fellowships (on this year's round or the next). I am hoping to finish gathering the data for 1996-2007 before the 2013 awards are announced.

The spreadsheet has a different sheet for each of the charts I wanted to obtain, namely:

  1. Number of grants per year
  2. Cost of the grants per year
  3. Number of grants per institution, 2008
  4. Number of grants per institution, 2009
  5. Number of grants per institution, 2010
  6. Number of grants per institution, 2011
  7. Number of grants per institution, 2012
  8. Distribution of all the grants across institutions, 2008-2012
  9. Consolidated list of all the grants, 2008-2012
Distant Reading

Voyant was used to analyse the text of the five British Academy page results, first separately year by year and then as a collated document of them all. The Taporware stopword list was edited to include common words in the corpus like "school", "dr", "project" and "department".

Cirrus word clouds were created and screen grabbed, and frequent key words were counted using the Summary and Words in the entire corpus tools. Results were exported as text, CSV and XML.

Please note this is a work-in-progress. Due to the nature of this project and this platform data and content
will vary over time and corrections and replacements are likely to be
done periodically. Every attempt to note changes and revisions will be
made.

Discussion of "Methodology"

On sharing the spreadsheet

I forgot to say I will share the source data openly here and on Figshare as a spreadsheet when I have finished collecting the data.
