The 1977 documentary Word is Out: Stories of Some of Our Lives was transcribed into book form in 1978, collecting interviews from the film and providing background information about its production. The film was a milestone in terms of granting national visibility to LGBT individuals and their struggles; it particularly helped to relieve feelings of isolation among individuals in rural and conservative areas--and it presented heterosexual audiences with a view of the everyday lives of a demographic often portrayed as immoral or mentally ill.
