The Unlit Lamp focuses on a girl named Joan and her fantasy of establishing a domestic life and partnership with a female friend while she studies toward becoming a doctor. Throughout the novel, Joan struggles to negotiate a difficult relationship with her mother--likely a reflection of Hall’s own struggles with her mother.
