Sonny and Cher Bono originally rose to prominence as a married musical duo with hits such as “The Beat Goes On” and “I Got You, Babe.” Their show, which premiered in 1971 as The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour mixed music, comedic skits, and improv and was a consistent success. It ended in 1974 when the couple split but enjoyed a two-season revival in 1976-77. Guests throughout the show included musicians, actors, and comics such as The Supremes, Steve Martin, Teri Garr, Tatum O’Neal, David Bowie, Muhammad Ali, and Raquel Welch.

Sonny passed away from injuries sustained in a skiing accident in 1998. Cher, whose musical success has endured through the 21st century, has become an icon for many gay men.
