The Rifleman

Sam Peckinpah - TV series - 1958-63 p. 95

Set in the 1870s in what was then the New Mexico Territory, this Western television series aired between 1958-63. A rancher who had previously fought on the Union side in the Civil War, Lucas McCain works to maintain peace and justice in the town, aided by his trusty Winchester rifle (notably, the actual rifle depicted would not be invented until 1892, several years after the period in which the show is set). The show presents complex realities of race, regionalism, and repercussions of the European colonization of North America.

The show was among the first on American television to depict a non-nuclear family; Lucas McCain was a widower raising his son, Johnny, on his own. Many of the episodes were written and directed by Samuel Peckinpah, who would go on to become a famous director of Western feature films.
