Co-edited by notable activists Karla Jay and Allen Young, the anthology Out of the Closets and Into the Streets provided an outlet for queer groups and individuals including Rita Mae Brown and the Radicalesbians.

Karla Jay was a prominent pioneer and scholar of LGBT studies and an advocate for gay rights. After taking issue with the male domination and patriarchal structures of the radical left in the US, she joined feminist and queer groups including the Redstockings and the Gay Liberation Front as well as Lavender Menace.

Allen Young is a writer and activist who worked throughout the US and Latin America over the course of his career, including campaigns in Cuba against Fidel Castro’s homophobic regime. He was also an active member of the Gay Liberation Front and has fought against industrial and nuclear development through such groups as the Mount Grace Land Conservation Trust.
