Newsweek

Periodicals - 1933 - p. 156

A weekly news magazine founded in 1933 by Thomas Martyn, Newsweek was purchased by The Washington Post Company in 1961; over the course of its existence, it has focused on political coverage and commentary--notably that of the Watergate scandal--as well as news, literary reviews, and school rankings. In 2010, Newsweek merged with The Daily Beast, and in 2013 it went to digital format only. One of Newsweek’s reporters, Michael Isikoff, was among the first to begin investigating then-President Clinton’s relationship with Monica Lewinsky; however, his editors nixed the story.

In 1970, Newsweek was the object of an Equal Employment Opportunity lawsuit led by sixty female employees who argued successfully that Newsweek’s exclusive employment of male reporters was discriminatory.
