Maurice

E.M. Forster - novel    - 1913 (published posthumously in 1971) - pp. 76, 207

Published posthumously due to E.M. Forster’s fear of censorship, Maurice is a gay romance between two men. Focalized through protagonist Maurice, it traces a hidden relationship between him and Clive, a university student who, with fatalistic resignation to social convention, heads towards marriage and breaks Maurice’s heart in the process.

Maurice’s story follows him through university, heartbreak, a stockbroking job, and a surreptitious affair. He makes various attempts to “cure” himself of his homosexuality through visits to a hypnotist. Somewhat unprecedentedly for a major author writing on homosexuality at the time, the book has a happy ending, made possible largely by its delayed publication and changes in British law during the intervening time.

Key elements: Europe, homosexuality, marriage
