La Bâtarde

Violette Leduc - autobiography - 1964 - p. 76

La Bâtarde is the memoir of Violette Leduc, a French lesbian author and feminist. Leduc’s writing has been characterized as erotic and explicit in the style of Jean Genet, though it has achieved significantly less international recognition. Leduc was born in penury and out of wedlock and was raised by a single mother whose daily struggles to earn a living served as a large component of the former’s feminist education--though she would eventually become the protege of foundational feminist and philosopher Simone de Beauvoir.

Key elements: absent father, Europe, feminism, homosexuality, lesbian
