Goodbye Mr. Chips

James Hilton - novella - 1934 - p. 75

Originally published in a supplement to an evangelical newspaper, the novella Goodbye Mr. Chips revolves around a British schoolteacher at a boys’ boarding school in rural England. With a strict, orthodox approach to teaching, Mr. Chippings (dubbed Mr. Chips by his pupils) gradually loosens up after marrying a charming woman named Katherine. Mr. Chips’s students respect him in spite of his stuffiness, and he gradually develops a sense of humor.

The sentimental novella is believed to be based on author James Hilton’s own experiences at the Leys School in Cambridge with a martinet teacher who also fostered Hilton’s early writing.

Key elements: Europe, father figures, marriage, teacher
