A major figure in Second Wave feminism, Kate Millett’s writings address topics such as gender inequality, reproductive rights, state-sanctioned torture, sexuality, and mental health. The autobiographical Flying discusses her coming out process and its personal and political repercussions; it focuses on her experiences between the years 1969-71, a time of general political turbulence and civil rights activism on various fronts.
Millett’s father was an alcoholic and physically abused her before leaving permanently when she was a teenager. Having earned her PhD from Columbia University in 1970, Millett has taught at institutions including Bryn Mawr, the University of North Carolina, the University of California-Berkeley, Barnard College, and Waseda University in Japan.
