A Chorus Line

Marvin Hamlisch - play - 1975 - p. 191

A Chorus Line is a metamusical, focusing on a group of seventeen dancers as they vie for one of eight roles in a Broadway production. Massively successful, it ran for more than 6,000 Broadway performances and won nine Tony Awards as well as a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Prompted by the choreographer, each dancer discusses his or her background, motivation, aspirations, and so on. Their stories include accounts of family, sexuality, alternate career paths, childhood, physical appearance and limitations, and more. Among other topics, the play thematizes impeded dreams, fleeting success, and the harsh realities of show business.
