Battle of Gaugamela

The Battle of Gaugamela took place in 331 BC.  This was the decisive battle of the conquest of Alexander the Great's.  This battle eventually led to the fall of the Persian Achaemenid Empire.  Before the battle, the Persian leader, Darius, tried to find a diplomatic way to end Alexander the Great's conquest into Persia.  The Persian army has been estimated to range everywhere from 50,000 men to over 200,000 men.  However, it is confirmed that the army outnumbered Alexander the Great's army.  In the aftermath of the Battle of Gaugamela, Persia was split into East and West division.  However, before Darius could regroup and form another army to battle back Alexander the Great he was murdered.  This is said to be the end of Persia with Darius' death.
