Activities for Young Children to Do at the Library or Take Home

Young children respond well to motion and emotion. With that in mind, this is the perfect handout to give to patrons for their youngsters. Yoga, in and of itself, is calming. This guide helps a child to react positively to his or her emotions and express them. It also helps adults to recognize how a child is feeling. This poster is recommended for use at home, in the library, and at school.
Once Critters Cry Too is read aloud, bring the children to an area to create. Ask them to think about what Zapatos looks like. Is it dark inside? Are the Critters happy? Have they found their way out of Zapatos? Or, is someone still eating "Whateveritwas?" Ask the children to draw what they think Zapatos looks like inside.
During another visit (or at home), switch gears and bring out paints, Q-tips, and paper. Ask the children what they think the world looks like outside of Zapatos. Who is there with them? What are they doing? Show them how to carefully dip the Q-tip in the paint and make a pointillism-style picture. Is it sunny? Are there flower? Is there rain?
Or, have the children make their own Critters as a "worry doll." Show them how to make wrap yarn around their fingers, tie it, and then snip all the yarn down. More than likely, they will need parental help with this project. Once the pom pom is to their liking, they can add eyes with glue dots. If there are foam sheets around, they can make feet. They can tell their "worry critters" about anything!
