  In May 2025, UCR Special Collections & University Archives (SCUA) embarked on a new zine tradition, inviting all UCR students to draw inspiration from archival images of Scotty to create their own original designs of the beloved bear. How could Scotty be updated, adapted, or altered to better reflect the experiences of UCR students in 2025?

  All qualifying entries were voted on by employees of UCR Library. The winning design, "An Unlikely Friendship" by Joseph Govea, was printed as a limited-edition sticker for release at the 2025 Inland Empire Archives Fair, alongside this zine. Due to the popularity of this competition and the excellence of the submissions received, SCUA decided to print an additional batch of stickers honoring the second place winner as well.
  
  This year, the Archives Fair will be held on Wednesday, October 22, 2025 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Drop by to pick up your free copies of these limited-edition zines and stickers, while supplies last!

  The IE Archives Fair celebrates the rich history and culture of the IE region every October in honor of American Archives Month. Hosted under the iconic arches of the Tomás Rivera Library, the Fair provides an opportunity to raise awareness of local archives, highlight student work with primary sources, and build bridges between institutional and community memory-keeping.   "I was inspired by the diverse and unique campus, environment for learning, and students at UCR. Many people focus on the strength of the individual and their opportunity to fulfill their potential. I, instead, focus on what gets the students by: friendships, connections, and diverse ideas. I have chosen this path as I have immigrated into this country, and UCR has been a very accepting community and almost like a second home. I wanted to share how it feels, through a drawing medium, how diversity can be shown. We not only benefit from the variety and acceptance, but it opens up the path to mutual respect to all."

  I’m a 21 year old Hispanic student studying Computer Science, with an interest in Computer Vision. I love to draw, cook, play video games, and board games in my spare time.
