Victorian Children and Poverty: Video / Allison Metheny

For the SYRCE Symposium I have created an informational video describing the lives of impoverished children. My focus was specifically on orphans and where they would go if they had no relatives to care for them. My intentions were to show that almost all conditions of the workhouses, foundling hospitals, and orphanages were cruel and that living on the streets was no better.

My creative process began with reading Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. As he wrote about the poor life of the young orphan, Oliver, it sparked an interest in me about children in the 19th century. As I began researching, many websites depicted that there were a huge number of children without parents in the 1800s and that they had to survive in other ways. Finally, I did some research on the Victorian Web and found a wide variety of information relating to what I wanted to do. It gave me insight and affirmed my enthusiasm for this project.
