Masoom Billah: Bangladesh phone keya tha.

MB: Bangladesh... Blis

I: Blis?

MB: Blis.

I: aap ne kis ko phone keya tha?

MB: mera friend ko

I: friend ko phone keya tha? aur aap apnay friend k baray mai batana chahein gye? kon hei apka dost? kesa dost hei?

MB: haan humara friend ka bataye ga, wo hamaray leeye larki dekhay ga... aur February mei hum wapis jaye ga, shaadi

MB: hamara larki dekhay ga wo

MB: haan school say hei! five year! udhar say humaray saath job keray ga. job keray ga, baad mei hum idhar aye ga, idhar per government ka... post office maloom hei

MB: post office mai job keray ga, tou apka government ka visa aye ga, tou wo idhar aye ga

MB: idhar aye ga abhe. wo udhar say apka wala, apka (inaudible) teaching de ga parcel ka, tou wo admi hamara friend

MB: UAE university ka idhar ayega? apka ye faiday ka baat nei?

I: ye hum janna chahtay hein k logg.... hum... logo ko behtar tareekay say jana chahtay hein. k log kis tarhan say yahan per rehtay hein... kya halaat hein, kya sochtay hein, iss leeye...

MB: hum ko five minute baat kera

I: hmm?

MB: wo five minute baat kera, tou aap ko tou nahe sunai dega, tou apka kya faida hai?

I: nai, university dega paisay

MB: university dega?

I: haan

MB: hamara faida he faida hei

MB: hamara dost apko maulana, maulvi maloom hei?

I: haan?

MB: maulvi maloom hei? apka wohee ye maulana ka... wohe admi hei maulvi

MB: aap kya kerta hai?

I: mai tou student hu

MB: student hei? hum idhar ka job keray ga

I: abhe aap job nai ker rahay?

MB: abhe job hei. abhe jo apka duty hei na? hamara duty subah 7 bajay start hei, apka dou bajay duty finish hei. dou bajay say apka... 4... dou ghanta aur time mile ga. baad mai apka room mei aye ga. room mai aye ga wash karay ga. baki sub khalaas karay ga. baad mai ander say (inaudible) room mai jaye ga, khana khaye ga, baad mai aapka wo television dekhay ga. Bangladesh ka news dekhay ga, apka Hindi film dekhay ga, baad mei raat ko soye ga.

I: ye apka routine hei?

MB: ye routine hei.

MB: room mei jaye ga?

I: haan?

MB: hamara room mei jaye ga?

I: nai, nai, nai, abhe hamein thora kaam hei... humein thora kaam hei.

R: I told Gulu that I will marry, he'll look for a girl, so I called.

I: What?

Fatima Maan: To tell about the marriage.

MB: Called Bangladesh.

MB: Bangladesh... Blis.

MB: Blis.

I: Who did you make the phone call to?

MB: To my friend.

I: You called your friend? And would you like to tell something about your friend? Who is your friend? What sort of a friend is he?

MB: I told my friend, and he'll look for a girl for me. And I'll go back in February and get married.

I: So, he'll look for a girl for you, and (you will) get married in February?

MB: Will marry in February.

I: So, who is this friend of yours?

MB: My friend is GuluGulu (Respondent uttered a name which I can't understand)

I: No, is he your childhood's... is he an old friend?

MB: He's an old friend. He's with me since schoool. Know of kinder garden?

I: Kinder garden? He's your friend since school?

MB: Yes, since school. Five year! And he used to work with us. He worked with me. Later on, I came here. Here, the government's... Know of post-office?

I: Hmm?

MB: Post-office?

Fatima and Interviewer: Yes, yes.

MB: Will work in post-office, and then the government will issue a visa, so then he'll come here.

Interviewer: So, he'll come here?

MB: So, he'll come here now. So then someone will teach him how to parcel, so that man is our friend, and he'll work with me.

I: Ahan, so he is a very good friend of yours?

MB: Very good friend.

(Yannick and Fatima talking inaudibly)

I: So, why are you away from him right now? Why are you here? Why are you not with him?

MB: It's far away, my country is fa away.

I: Why are you not with your friend? You called him, right? So this means that you are quite far away from your friend. Why are you so far away? Why are you here?

Fatima: Why are you here? Why are you here, after leaving all of them?

I: Why have you left him to be here at this time?

MB: I don't know.

I: Oh okay, so tell, why did you call your friend? Why didn't you call someone else? In what way did you... why did you choose your friend to call? Why didn't you talk to someone else?

MB: I told you, right? That he'll look for a girl, and talk about me.

I: Oh, so you called him to tell about the girl.

MB: Yes, he said that he'll talk.

I: Ahan, so have you talked to him about the girl before?

MB: Yes, called him twice, so he'll ring a missed bell.

I: Okay, so he'll give you a miss call?

MB: Yes, he'll give a miss call. He's busy right now. He won't receive the miss call. So, then he'll have time later, and call me.

I: Okay, fine. And who else did you... who else could you have called but you didn't?

MB: To us?

I: Yes, could you have called someone else besides your friend?

MB: Yes, the friend knows that he's gonna get a job here, and work here. He knows.

I: Okay, and would you like to tell us something about yourself?

MB: I'd tell you. This... yours... is this governmental? Is this [the UAE's] government's?

I: This?

MB: Yes.

I: No, we are university students.

MB: You're a university student?

I: Yes, this is our project.

MB: Your country?

I: I am from Pakistan.

MB: Your country?

Fatima Maan: Pakistan.

MB: You came here for UAE university? Isn't this to your benefit/ How is it to your benefit?

I: We want to know about people... we... we want to know people better, like, how do they live here... in what conditions and what they think...

MB: I called for five minutes?

I: What?

MB: I called for five minutes?

I: Yes.

MB: So, we talked for five minutes, but you couldn't hear it. So, how is it to your benefit?

I: No, the university will pay.

MB: The university will?

I: Yes.

MB: It is all to my advantage.

I: Yes.

(inaudible)

I: Your friend?

MB: My friend. Do you know of the Maulvi? Or Maulana?

I: what?

MB: Do you know of Maulvi? The Maulana is Maulvi.

I: Okay.

(Inaudible)

I: Would you like to tell us something about yourself, what do you do?

MB: What do you do?

I: I am a student.

MB: You're a student? I will work here.

I: Are you not working right now?

MB: I am working right now. Right now my duty is from 7 in the morning, to 2 in the afternoon. From two o clock to... four... you get two more hours. Then I come to my room. Then I take a shower. And finish other matter. Then from inside... (Inaudible) I'll come to the room, eat dinner, then watch television. I watch news of Bangladesh and then I watch a Hindi film. At night, I go to sleep.

I: So, this is your routine?

MB: Yes, this is routine.

I: Okay then, thank you very much.

MB: Thank you.

I: Thanks.

MB: Come to the room?

I: what?

MB: Would you like to come to my room?

I: No, no, no. We have some work... we have some work.

MB: You have work? Okay, then next time?

I: Okay.
