Temporality

Temporality is the state of being temporal – that is, associated with earthly life in the sense that time is limited (Merriam-Webster). Temporality can be seen as an assessment of something’s temporary quality in the linear progression of time in life or in natural existence. It is not exclusively used to describe living things, but it is derived from the notion that the progression of time sets limits.

Bill T. Jones’ “Ghostcatching” is an attempt to tackle the temporality of human movement and change it – possibly make it eternal, with no limits on how many times the movements can be replayed and traced with lines that show the body’s progression.

On Youtube, a viewer can replay the video again and again.

Cameras capture the motion of the sensors used on the dancer in time and space (Goldman). Once recorded, the motions can be recreated digitally, coordinated in time and space exactly as they were executed. Are such capabilities of advanced technology threatening to eradicate temporality? This question is central to the digital age. What is temporal, what is earthly, what is human, when it can be recorded, photographed, or captured, and later replayed or recreated at leisure?
