Gifs or Graphic user interfaces is a perhaps the most common use of media in Homestuck.  A gif is a type of file in which every pixel consists of 8bits, which can comprise of any of a wide range of colours. It’s ease of compressibility and thus portability has made it popular in the World Wide Web for use in icons, logos and short animations.  A gif animation is a file in which different frames can be reproduced in succession each with a slight time delay (one after the other). Since the rise of popular browser such as Netscape 2.0 in the early 90s, gifs have been widely used in websites, in continuous play (Walter) and have permeated into popular culture in the form of “reaction giffs”, humorous short clips from recordings or movies that are used to express a reaction ro a particular situation. As described in Reddit, a popular Internet community, “A reaction gif is a physical or emotional response that is captured in a gif which you can link in response to someone or something on the Internet.” (reddit)
