Nadia Benchallal

My project focuses on the ways in which Nadia Benchallal uses her camera as a tool to tell a story - 'writing' an essay with her photographs - and examines to what extent Benchallal can claim authorship to her documentation of Muslim women.

There is much emphasis on storytelling and authorship in my project and so the set up on Scalar is in the form of a book. It begins by introducing the protagonist: Nadia Benchallal. Benchallal as a character, a woman with choices who takes deliberate actions, is the backbone to my argument. Anecdotes about her personal life and quotes from her, in addition to the audio soundtrack of her interview, will help make her into a 'real person' for the reader.

An integral part of this project is the photographs, making it a very visual argument. Benchallal's photographs will frame my statements and, by appearing frequently throughout this 'book', will set the tone for the reader as he/she flips through the various pages.

Good job, straight to the point, it gives me a very good idea of what the rest of the essay will look like. `but, on the other hand, it wouldn't hurt to try to convey a readily comprehensible metaphor that can relate the topic of this essay with the format in which it will be presented.
